The new sponsors of the popular Inter-Col Games, Republic Bank, along with organizers the Principals Association of Grenada and the Secondary Schools Games Association, have scheduled April 07 for the staging of what the organizers call a “Special Inter-Col Games.”
It’s the first time in three years the games are being staged. In 2019 Inter-col games were cancelled due to industrial dispute between teachers and the government and in 2020 and 2021 the COVID Pandemic forced the cancellation.
Speaking at Wednesday’s official launch of the 2022 Games at Republic Bank, Head Office, Maurice Bishop Highway, Grand Anse, Chief Executive Officer of Republic Bank, Grenada, Naomi De Allie said the bank welcomes this opportunity to host Grenada’s premier track and field event.
Mrs De Alie said the bank’s sponsorship which is more than EC$80,000 is to provide full support for the staging of the one-day Games and is looking forward to the excitement and socializing of students.
Permanent Secretary Kim Fredrick said the Ministry of Sports is ready to provide technical and other support for the games, noting that Inter-Col is an integral part of the life of the student.
President of the Secondary Schools Principals Association Dominique Jerimiah said it was necessary to stage Inter-Col in 2022. He said interest among the principals and students is good.
“Already several schools have staged their inter-house games and the participation and the momentum are good,” said Jerimiah. Three or four schools being out of sports for two years are challenged to raise the money to prepare athletes, but we will have good participation including the schools from Carriacou,” he said.
According to the veteran principal, the games will be competitive and championship titles will be awarded to the winners of the boys’ and the girls’ competitions, but the key objective is the staging of the games will help return the schools to some form of normalcy.
Jerimiah said Inter-col is important in the life of students, noting that students who entered secondary school three years ago are yet to experience the passion and beauty of the event.
Director of Inter-Col Games Joel Mitchell said just 46 events will be contested – 23 for the boys and 23 for the girls. The events will cover four categories of competition: preparatory, sub-juniors, juniors and seniors.
Mitchell said Inter-Col will include all track and field events, noting that because of limited time several of the events will be open. He is promising a well-organized and managed One-day Games starting with the opening ceremony at 9 AM and concluding at 6 in the evening.
Mitchell said the Grenada Athletic Association, and stakeholders, in general, are supportive of the staging of the games in 2022.
According to Jeremiah, the Games are branded Special Inter-Col and while records and achievements will be archived they will not erase the records of the traditional three-day Inter-col last held in 2018.
