Ajamu’s daughter graduated with the highest distinction

Memories of childhood in Mama Cannes stay with Dr Jamila Shani Wallace, OD.

She was just seven years old when she migrated to the United States and now that she will be 27 in August, she is a Doctor of Optometry in California.

Having graduated from Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry in Pomona, California, the daughter of Edison ‘AJAMU’ Mitchell has done him and Grenada proud in the medical field.

Her education began at the Crochu Roman Catholic School, where her favourites were Teacher Lucy and Teacher Tessa. She recalls having to wear glasses “at a very young age. The majority of my family members also wear glasses.”

She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Howard University and began to pursue her goal in optometry.

“My interest in optometry was sparked by a visit to my family optometrist. I was fortunate to have a doctor that took the time to tell me about his job and share his passion for his work with me,” she recalled.

Optometry is described as the professional practice of eye and vision care, including the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and conditions of the eye.

Growing up in her father’s footsteps, the daughter of 9 time calypso king of Grenada shared memories of her musical childhood days.

“Growing up my hobbies were signing, playing piano and guitar,” she told The Grenadian Voice.

“Further down the road, I would like to establish a non-profit in Grenada to provide vision care,” she added.

But for now her immediate plans are to work in private practice in the US.
