The South Pen and Essay Writing Competition was organized and sponsored by the Constituency Branch of South Saint George and was designed to encourage students to spend time during their long holidays to research and produce an enlightening essay on Emancipation.

NDC Caretaker for South Saint George Ray Roberts commended the winners and their parents and urged other parents to recognize their responsibility during this period of the COVID Pandemic to keep their children purposefully engaged in activities that contribute to their education and development.

Cultural Ambassador and calypso icon Elwyn “BLACKWIZARD” Mc Quilkin who coined the idea of staging a Summer Holiday Essay Writing Competition, said he is yearning to see today’s generation and future ones give greater meaning to Emancipation Celebrations. He said too much focus is on entertainment and would like to see citizens become more aware and conscious about the struggles that brought about Emancipation.

Political Leader of NDC Franka Bernardine commended the winners, noting the research, the content and the quality of their writing demonstrated the time and efforts they put into the exercise.

She impressed upon the students to remain focused in their quest to educate themselves and encouraged the parents to be of support in this challenging period.
