New national Table Tennis champions crowned

Shannon Douglin and Anique Bonaparte are the 2020 GTTA Excel Plaza Table Tennis Men and Women’s singles champions. They captured their respective titles on Wednesday December 09 in the Finals of the National Singles Championships, staged at the Public Workers Union Building (PWU) Tanteen, Saint George’s.

Shannon Doughlin – Mens Champ

Shannon Douglin took less than 30 minutes to win the Men’s Singles, defeating Trevor Layne in straight sets 11-8; 11-7; 11-4, while Anique Bonaparte beat Monique Williams three sets to one 11-8; 7-11; 11-4; 11-6.

The match of the evening was DeWayne Newland’s superb Boys Under-15 battle against fellow Saint John ‘s player Qwanell Walker. The two students had spectators spellbound with their awesome athleticism and energetic stroke play.

Newland won the match three sets to one 11-9; 16-14; 6-11; 11-6, displaying good defence judgment and retrieving consistently several of Walkers big smashes, from ten to fifteen meters away and often times counter smashing. The Boys Under-18 Finals also was a thriller between Cedric Marquez and Shermal Williams.

The two six-feet tall left-handers went after each other from the first serve, displaying a variety of strokes and a determination to win.

Anique Bonaparte – Women and Girls Open Champ

However, Marquez was the more consistent of the two, executing his forehand and backhand strokes with greater precision, winning 11-9; 11-2; 7-11; 11-9.

Anique Bonaparte won a second title defeating Shadowry Henry to win the Girls Open and Javion Henry scored a 12-11; 11-4; 11-4 victory against Kirani Francis to win the Boy’s Under-12.

Nigel (Junior) St John playing in his first Men’s 45 and over Veteran’s, defeated Vijay Outim 11-7; 11-6; 11-6 to take the title.
