Shantay Augustine breaks Jacinta Bartholomew’s 39-year 400-metre record

St Joseph Convent, St George’s sprinter Shantay Augustine produced a sensational performance at her school’s inter-house athletic meet last Saturday at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium.

The 2022 Grenada CARIFTA Games competitor broke the 39-year-old Convent record set by Jacinta Bartholomew, who was a member of the first Grenada team to compete at the Summer Olympics in 1984.

Augustine ran a time of 59.54 to erase the 1984 mark of 60.6 second seconds which was done on the grass by Bartholomew. It was a big celebration for the athlete who received a standing ovation from the stadium crowd. Last year, Augustine competed in the CARIFTA Girls’ U17 category and reached the final of the 200 meters.

She ran a time of 25.49 seconds and placed 6th in the final won by Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in 23.42 seconds.

Augustine, who trains with Grenada’s leading track coach Albert Joseph, also won two other sprint events last Saturday. She ran the 200 meters in a time of 25.26 seconds and the 60 meters dash in 7.57 seconds. At last year’s Junior CARIFTA Games, she recorded a time of 25.49 seconds in the 200 meters and placed 6th in the final won by Hodge of the BVI in 23.42 seconds.
