Thousands of dollars are lost at sea as a small fishing boat sunk last week Friday May 29. The cargo was made up mostly of goods for small shops in Union Island.
The boat which is said to be owned and operated by ‘Troy’ of Union Island was at the time carrying goods which was purchased in Carriacou.
According to reports, there seems to be an unofficial trade arrangement between Carriacou and Union Island which has been going on for years. As part of that, the boat which bears the name Lady JJ, would ply the route between those small Grenadine Islands. Before covid-19 it made regular trips on Mondays and Thursdays.
Up to press time we had no official report from the Police as to the cause of the accident, but fingers are pointing to the fact that the boat could have been carrying too much goods which caused overweight.
As the COVID-19 protocols were put in place to contain the spread of the virus in Grenada, the ports of entry were also closed. This interrupted the regular trips made from Union Island which is part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The trips brought goods to small shop owners who purchase them in Carriacou.
There are no reports of lives lost as Captain Troy and his team were quickly rescued by a fisherman and the Grenada Coast Guard.
